The food here is actually anything but rustic — it’s better than that. It’s carefully constructed, cleverly presented and at times quite inventive. But like good Spanish cooking should it feels untamed, natural and sun-soaked. It also comes at prices which encourage light-hearted ordering and aren’t too far removed from holiday eats in Barcelona... Our Spanish waitress is infectiously friendly and our house red is dangerously gluggable; and continually topped-up bread is a warm touch. Despite paella for two, Basque rib-eyes and gambas a la plancha, it's mostly about the tapas here. Plates range from toasted almonds and bread with garlic mayo to jamon iberico, boquerones, steamed octopus with smoked paprika and new potatoes, and torreznos fritos – crispy pork belly with a sweet and spicy sauce. Drinks include Spanish wines and craft beers, a selection of cocktails (including a dedicated gin and tonic menu) and a number of different sherries. Keep an eye out for specials on sangria, too.

For a well-priced alternative to tapas, choose the £10 daily special (paella on Thursdays). Puddings such as flan de huevo (crème caramel) receive favourable reports, and the Spanish craft beers, served at the big copper bar, are also worth attention.
