    Time Out Says…

    The dining space at the original is calm and white, with crisp linen and enough of both formality and trendiness to gratify different audiences. Contemporary art such as a Tracey Emin light sculpture add a splash of Shoreditch cool. Menus follow the distinctively British style set by Mark Hix, chef-supremo of Caprice group when the Rivington opened, using fresh, seasonal British ingredients from sustainable sources. The wine list offers an excellent choice by the glass or carafe.

    Prices at the Rivington are not low, but they are fair - starters around £6.50, mains a little over double that - because the price reflects the quality of the ingredients. The wine list is short and well priced, they serve breakfast from 8am and, by prior arrangement, will even arrange a banquet for eight people or more, of game birds or lobster and shellfish, of suckling pig or mutton and turnip pie. It is an eating house with many uses. And that lunchtime I used it to restore my faith in restaurants.

    The kitchen continues to deliver "very British food to a high standard", taking in everything from comfort classics (steamed chicken, bacon and leek pie) to upbeat contemporary ideas (seared Cornish scallops with broad beans and chorizo) via ever-popular Scotch duck eggs, dry-aged steaks, fish and chips, and puds such as spotted dick with custard.
