  • Time Out

    Time Out Says…

Since opening in 2002, this London outpost of the top-drawer Manhattan M&H has been one of central London’s best places for drinking proper cocktails in clubby but unstuffy surroundings. Officially it is a members’ bar, and so discreet that the only outward evidence of its existence is a tiny sign next to a buzzer on Poland Street. But non-members can go – by booking the ground floor or basement bar only – up to 11pm. Dark and cosy booths are the setting for excellent cocktails from a menu designed by cocktail guru Dale DeGroff, with a members' only floor providing an even more relaxed environment upstairs.

Three floors of prohibition-style speakeasy cocktail bar are in balance with the dark leather seating and rich mahogany fittings usually found in the most exclusive of Mayfair’s private member’s clubs – but there are rules (Rule #7: “Do not bring anyone unless you would leave that person alone in your home.”), and indeed it is a members club that allows Joe Public to visit so long as he/she books ahead. An astonishing array of over 70 beers, wines, fizzes and cocktails greet you from the menu at said bars – from the modern-day classics such as a Moscow Mule to pre-modern-day classics like the Penicillin.
