    Just Opened London Says…

    Sake is a traditional, alcoholic Japanese drink made from fermented rice (koji), which is an integral part of Japanese cuisine. A dedicated bar with wooden kappo counter and sake served in masu cups (wooden boxes) merges the traditional with contemporary design. Other drink options include varieties of Japanese whisky, rum, umeshu (Japanese liqueur), flavoured sake, craft beers and shochu (Japanese hard liquor).

    Time Out Says…

    Attention to detail abounds. The décor is modern and sleek, with rich wooden tables, curved-back chairs and touches of black leather, but be sure to ask for a booth – partially screened, they’re the best seats in the house. The traditional crockery is beautiful and the chopsticks are double-ended, which is a nice touch for when you’re serving food for sharing (the Japanese frown on using the same chopsticks for eating and serving, unless, of course, those chopsticks have two ends). There’s even a sake sommelier.

    The Nudge Says…

    The name means “sake cellar”, and it’s appropriately run in part by a sake seller (Gekkeikan, who have a royal warrant for sake), as well as The Araki (a two Michelin star sushi restaurant). Not such a bad start. The space itself is a two-floor classically Japanese outfit, all black & bare wood, with intimate ground floor dining booths overlooked by a trellised wooden ceiling and a dedicated sake bar, while below in the sake cellar you can sit around the 11-seater counter to watch the chefs at work
