Regarded by many as the capital’s classiest custodian of the classic cocktail, the American Bar has been doing a refined line in dapper drinks since 1898...The cocktails are excellent and executed with all the elegance you’d expect for £14 a pop. What the Savoy does is old world glamour, a little glitz that side-steps the tackiness. There are photographs on the walls to remind you just whose ghosts you’re sitting next to, and a piano, regularly played, to add a little background to the chatter. The bar is usually busy – impressive given it doesn’t have it’s own entrance... There's little to fault: everything is present and correct, and much better than that implies. Does that make it hard to be truly affectionate about? Yes, possibly. But when it comes down to it, and despite its namesakes, there's only one American Bar.

This is where the moneyed come to play – as well as a few people enjoying a rare splashing of the cash in honour of a special occasion. ..It’s hard not to fall in love with the Hollywood appeal of the American Bar. Relive the Golden Age and indulge in a couple of cocktails – it may test your credit limit but it’s oh so worth it.
