On a quiet night, there are few finer spaces in which to enjoy a cocktail, whether traditional or 21st-century...the staff treat everyone with respect and always mix their cocktails with care. And if the crowds prove too much, the hotel’s Fumoir bar, a cigar-lover’s paradise until the smoking ban, is an elegant escape hatch.

This is a lively space, meant for champagne more than cocktails. The charming manager, Denis Broci, starts us with a bottle of Jacquesson 736 and some scallops to keep the wolf from the door...They do serve some cocktails, he explains, as he prepares a Luceo Non Uro. It's a hell of a drink. Sweet sherry, Marsala, port and orange bitters are stirred with Dalmore whisky. Then the whole thing is finished with a dash of Prohibition-era bourbon. A 90-year old ingredient seems a bit gimmicky, but who cares when the drink tastes this good?

Claridge's Bar offers a huge array of drinks, despite its relatively small size. You can choose from almost twenty vodkas for your martini, for a start. There’s also a great number of vintage champagnes, and terrific cocktails including the sweetest, simplest bellini in town.
