    This Fitzrovia tabanco (Andalusian sherry bar) has a bit of a split personality. Half typical bodega, with its austere looks and sherry straight from the barrel (only the dirt from 100 years of cigarette smoke is missing), and half modernista restaurant, with its salad of roast squash with oloroso and coriander, or Palamos red prawns with coconut milk and spring onion. But that ambivalence apart, this is a terrific spot with friendly service and nicely restrained prices.

    The service, by jolly Spanish folk, was attentive, snappy and charming as hell... I ate a plate of perfectly OK cecina with remoulade and drank some Albizu tempranillo. The garlic and chilli gambas in their shells were more hassle than they were worth. The rolled lamb breast with assertively citrus puy lentils, rosemary and salsa verde was affable but not entirely delicious.

    Drakes’s USP is sherry ‘en rama’ – from the barrel, as it’s served in Jerez. The seven sherries (all from the well-regarded producer Fernando de Castilla) run the gamut from ultra-dry fino to an extra-old, super-sweet Pedro Ximénez (PX). The rare palo cortado, with its savoury, saline edge, and the rich, nutty, dry oloroso are mind-blowingly intense.
