    The 40-odd affordable cocktails (£5.50-£7.25), stencilled above the busy bar counter, are strong and served with ceremony: a Holy Freud Lemonade contains vodka, lychee, lemonade and elderberry, while mojitos come in several varieties. Some 15 types of bottled beer include Meantime, Budvar and Zywiec, while wine starts at a bargain £3.35 a glass.

    Cocktails, cocktails, cocktails. Freud is a cocktail bar and you won’t be maxing out the credit card to order a drink here, although the prices have risen and are more in line with other cocktail bars now – you can expect to pay £6-£8 for a drink. And the cocktails are good...Freud has endured for over two decades through some of the UK’s worst economic downturns and has managed to stay modern and relevant to today’s London drinking scene. Admirable.

    World's Best Bars Says…

    Tucked down a stairwell away from the pulse and buzz of Shaftesbury Avenue, Freud is a welcome find in a part of town not exactly steeped in great bars. The interior is cramped and rickety but that's part of its charm. The drinks list is chalked up on a blackboard behind the bar. Cocktails are the thing here; they may not be the most refined but there's a lot to like. The bar has been here since the mid-1980s, weathering all kinds of shifts in taste and fashion. We can see it lasting a good deal longer.
