It was, quite simply, the best steak I have ever eaten in this country. The meat had proper flavour, a serious char outside and pink to purple inside. The rib-eye was almost as good. Naturally, to go with this there were more of Heston Blumenthal's triple-cooked chips...A word on drinks: Hawksmoor is managed by Nick Strangeway, one of London's great barmen, and he will enthuse endlessly to you about the classic cocktails they have resurrected; think Georgia Mint Juleps, Black Forest Sazeracs and the austere-sounding Puritan. The moderately-priced wine list is equally inventive.
This Spitalfields steakhouse has wooed much of London since opening in 2006; word-of-blog has only served to create an even bigger buzz around the restaurant and its food..The savvy staff do a terrific job of explaining the differences. Steaks are seared on Josper charcoal grills to crusty-outside, tender-inside perfection. The menu doesn’t stop at the bovine, with Tamworth pork ribs, crab and samphire salad, and lobsters all making an appearance..
Quality remains as high as ever at the original Hawksmoor, and readers continue to praise the ‘fantastic’ steaks, ‘food-porn’ burgers, triple-cooked chips and even the homemade tomato ketchup – as we do too...Calorific puds and wacky ice creams round things off, wines include plenty of beef-friendly reds and the cocktail list is a stunner. Some say that prices have ’gone mad’, but the express menu is a steal and you can BYO wine on Mondays.
