Time Out Says...
There is no choice of main course – it’s rotisserie chicken, free-range and organic birds from Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. These roasts are served with a seasonal vegetable accompaniment – on our visit, a ratatouille-like caponata. The quality of the meat is apparent: this is poultry that needs no peri-peri marinades to imbue it with flavour.
Their habitat is made manifest in texture, flavour and appearance — fat, shiny cushions merrily revolving. The meat is tender but agreeably confrontational, the taste lends positive definition to the phrase old-fashioned.
Starters include charred broad bean pods with dill crème fraîche, while desserts feature seasonal ideas such as gooseberry and elderflower custard tart alongside artisan ice creams from Sorbitum. On Sundays, punters can look forward to communal treats in the shape of suckling pig, beef shank or sea bass. Prosecco on tap, off-piste wines and takeaways complete the offer.
