Design My Night Says...
It could be easy to judge Looking Glass on their sparse entrance, but this is a cocktail bar that should be assessed on its serious boundary-pushing tastes and the buzz produced by the clientele sipping on the award-winning cocktails. With most of the area behind the looking glass open for mingling and cocktail-produced dancing, this looks set to be a Shoreditch party bar.
Not sure we’d call the décor cosy (industrial floors, bare bulbs) or Alice in Wonderland-like but even so this bar is a welcome oasis on a desert-like Hackney Road. Cocktails (£8-12) were a mix of very good (King’s Snifter, Storm in a Teacup) and too eccentric (Red Velvet Martini) but if you like experimenting and pudding-esque drinks it might be more your bag.
We said the words gin, vermouth, absinthe and thyme, and what did we get in return? A goblet-full of hope for Hackney’s cocktail scene, served under a smoke-filled bell jar with pebbles and dried thyme. Yep, Looking Glass Cocktail Club impressed...Customer experience is tantamount here, and the bar staff make it their job to create your perfect cocktail. Ordering off the menu, though, is equally pleasing.
