Evening Standard Says...
At Mark Hix’s fabulous new joint in Shoreditch there’s next to no choice but nonetheless everything you could possibly want. Tramshed serves chicken and steak, straightforwardly cooked but absolutely superlative in quality, and not much else...Tramshed is a terrific achievement, a great addition to London altogether. Being able to create a restaurant of this size, so ruthlessly conceived and faultlessly executed, in such a noble building, so stylishly converted, is unimaginable anywhere else — not just in Norwich or Coventry, but even in London. Mark this one-up for Shoreditch. And Hix.
The room remains a winning combination of fun, glamour and heritage: a Damien Hirst cow and chicken in formaldehyde suspended over the main dining room makes a striking first impression set against the backdrop of a building that once generated the power for east London’s trams...Staff are friendly yet stretched, leaving diners feeling more than a little processed.
As usual Nick Strangeway has designed the cocktail menu and you’ll see a few familiar drinks, like the Hix Fix, and Mark’s bottled cocktails, we liked the Campari based Twitter and Bisted. A section of the menu is dedicated to local beers and ciders, don’t leave without trying the Burrow Hill Pear cider. The menu, like the decor, is minimalist. Apart from the bar snacking menu, you have a choice of steak or chicken, and the whole roast chicken, presented perching magnificently on a skewer, is delicious.
