From the offerings on toast there is a perfect dish for a Sunday supper: sautéed wild mushrooms on sour dough with, in the middle, a runny duck-egg yolk. What lifts it above the ordinary is an intense mushroom purée spread across the toast before being layered with the mushrooms.

When I went I ate a perfectly good skirt steak with dripping chips and an onion fritter, a cobnut salad (which comes with salad cream, of which I’m a shameless fan), plus a date pudding with marmalade ice cream and treacle sauce. ‘Yes’ to all of this. And ‘oh, go on then’ to the Meshigener Palone cocktail, which is vodka with almond and vanilla jam and pomegranate, and is far too easy to drink.

In the so-hip Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, well informed service delivers seasonal British cooking – modern but not outlandish – that will leave you craving more...Potato dumplings (aka gnocchi) are served with tender baby globe artichokes and wild mushrooms. The size of this – and other savoury dishes – was modest, but prices are fair. Old-fashioned lemon posset is given a contemporary twist with a red berry puree. All our dishes were faultess.
