This old London boozer has been given one of the more pleasing makeovers I’ve seen in recent years. It’s industrial lite, with a hint of Rennie Mackintosh. There is a feeling of air and space amid the noise and clatter of London outside...It has a smart drinks selection including locally brewed beers and a cocktails list which uses words like “tincture”. In short, it’s all thoroughly hip, as befits this part of town. Hipness is fine. It’s hep to be hip. What matters is substance, and they have that in spades. They don’t need silly gimmicks. After all, they have pork-scratching seasoned popcorn. What more could anyone need?
The daily-changing menu is short and can be made shorter by choosing one of the three main courses to share, as we do. Whole grilled Dover sole served on the bone but divested of head and tail has an extraordinarily succulent texture and bottomless flavour, somehow delivering more than is expected of a fish...The suggestion of Aphros Loureiro Vinho Verde 2013 at £32 from Vasco Croft, who is committed to biodynamics and even sometimes to treading grapes with organic feet, is a sound one. There is a suppleness perfect with the sole and enough fruit ’n’ flowers to sail happily into puddings.
It might jump the shark slightly with the seasonal/local theme, but this pub can't be faulted for its excellent food, drinks, service and ambience...Culpeper offers an easy mix of drinking and dining in the same space – it’s a proper gastropub, not a pub with a dining room – and the beers will please any real ale enthusiast. On our visit, these included zesty Mad Goose Purity pale ale, hoppy summer ale from Hop Back, and session ales from Hogs Back and Fuller’s. There are also several London craft brews by the bottle, a French and Italian wine list that is entirely organic, a decent cocktail list and even some excellent own-made soft drinks.
