The real stars here, though, are the cocktails: a rotating list from the crew behind Hawskmoor and Foxlow. Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew (a Hawksmoor classic, created by one of their best-loved bartenders) is a must-try: a generous glass tankard that’s part old-fashioned lemonade, part slush puppy, pepped up with gin, fresh ginger and a splash of London Pride. Nibbles – such as juicy fat olives or pairs of kabanos (dry, smoked Polish sausage) – are excellent, but for something more substantial, you’ll have to go upstairs to the restaurant. Leaving the bar to those of us who want to get stuck into some more cocktails.

There’s a new cocktail bar beneath the Balham branch of (basically) everyone’s favourite restaurant, Foxlow. As we’ve come to expect from Will Beckett and Huw Gott, it’s the perfect combination of friendly neighbourhood space and trendy new spot. The interior has the usual speakeasy-style dim lighting and smooth leather booths that we’ve come to love, but the drinks menu, of 10 ever-changing cocktails, is what gives The Owl its edge. Featuring creatively-crafted tipples such as the Tom and Jerez – gin, lemon, dry sherry pear & almond – we’ll be making sure to try the whole lot.

Now part of Hawksmoor offshoot, Foxlow, the venue remains a cosy prospect with its black leather booths and warm wood cladding – like a New York-style neighbourhood late-night haunt. As at all Hawksmoor bars, cocktails are reliably pukka, and always interesting. La Pomme Qui Rit (Calvados, peach, pear, porter and Pont l’Evêque cheese, served straight up) and Nice Shoes (a twist on Sangria that adds fruits and red and white wines to brandy) appear on a seasonally adjusted list alongside Hawksmoor old faithfuls such as Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew (gin, ginger, lemon and London Pride) served in a tankard.
