    Located on the hectic Uxbridge Road, this regal boozer is the best pub for miles around, combining a beautifully restored interior that’ll induce pub envy, highly respectable food, a well-selected drinks menu and friendly, long-serving members of staff... Ales are well-kept with Timothy Taylor Landlord or UBU Purity almost always available, while wine is taken seriously here – the list stretches to some 30 pages detailing regions and varieties in painstaking detail.

    Square Meal Says…

    There are excellent boards of charcuterie and smoked fish to share, or you can kick off with lemon arancini, Gorgonzola and beetroot salad before getting stuck into a char-grilled steak, a pie or Loch Duart salmon with sour onions, celeriac purée and piquillo pepper mash. For afters, perhaps order dark chocolate pot with blackberry compote. Drinks also merit serious attention, from homemade lemonade and regularly changing ales to a stupendous 300-bin wine list with a fondness for Pinot Noir and boutique vineyards; you can also buy bottles at shop prices to take home.

    The pub's diverse wine list and refined pub grub has already been declared by one newspaper critic as making him "jump for joy". No surprise to learn then that the two owners have such temples of gastronomic pleasure as The Capital and The Greenhouse on their CVs. There are more than 400 bins on the wine list, and emphasis is given to riesling and pinot noir from across the globe, as well as boutique wine makers and small Rhône valley estates. The cooking is just as well-honed, with dishes including roasted rump of lamb served with creamed white beans, pickled mushrooms, rosemary, roasted courgette and new season garlic (all mains £11.50-£17.50).
