Don’t be fooled by its name: the Stoke Newington Tea House is not a teahouse. It’s actually a pub, near Clissold Park, that serves booze and roasts and also speciality tea. In fact, when we headed down on a Sunday afternoon, we were the only people in the joint with teapots on our table. Everyone else was boozing and tucking into Sunday roasts. That’s not to say they don’t have a great selection: there are almost 30 blends on the menu, priced between £3 and £4.

SNTS offers teas in abundance, some 80 loose-leaf varieties. But Stokey’s Generation Y parents are after harder stuff while their little angels play in the rear beer garden: Bloody Mary, Pimm’s, craft ales and punchy Pilsners, perhaps, or wine from £16.50. To eat, choose from full English and other brekkie plates, deep-fill sarnies, jam-jar prawn cocktail, beef Wellington, or the likes of aubergine and goats’ cheese stack (£11.50) – followed by possets and stickies.

Daily-baked bread and all-day brunches and British tapas are available to complement the tea. The London School of Tea, run by the London specialist Lucy Chappell, will open soon above the pub, with workshops and advice on the latest tea trends.
