The wine list goes big on bottles from across the South of France, with a particular concentration on the south-west. There are more than 200 in the cellar (many of which are sourced exclusively), with at least 20 different wines available by the glass. Monthly wine dinners offer the chance to sample at least four. Food-wise, it's all about Gascon small plates. Expect dishes ranging from Toulose sausage with lentils, a signature duck burger and pine-smoked prawns with horseradish cream to crunchy beans with a chilli dressing and egg and caviar on toast. A selection of foie gras dishes also features.

Lovers of all things Gallic and vinous (with the occasional bargain thrown in) should swing by Club Gascon's ‘annex' – a specialist bar offering 200 wines from southern France, with ‘small plates' to match. The menu is proudly regionalist, with a great line in charcuterie, artisan cheese and all manner of ‘piggy' and ‘ducky' delights: rillettes, pâtés and ‘vintage' Bayonne ham make superior nibbles, while heartier fare might take the form of Toulouse sausage with lentils, a famed foie gras and truffle burger or pine-smoked prawns with horseradish cream.

Attached to the excellent French restaurant Club Gascon, this West Smithfield bar has a subtle, elegant atmosphere, with pale blue walls and inviting leather banquettes. It has something of the air of a gentlemen's club, relaxed but sophisticated. Unsurprisingly given its name, it has an incredible wine list featuring a large selection of bottles from south-west France. Evidently a lot of care and consideration has gone in to compiling it, packed as it is with obscure and unexpected delights. You could easily spend an evening here tasting and comparing. Should you get a little hungry, they also serve excellent snacks including slices of Gascon black ham and foie gras.
