A beacon for Asian fine dining since 2003, Michelin-starred Benares brings French-inspired refinement to spice-based cooking “without depleting the authenticity of Indian flavour”. The kitchen delivers “awesome food” and “real creativity” across the board, although tasting menus are the undoubted showcase for chef Atul Kochhar’s talents. Kindly, engaging staff deliver “spotless service” in the slick, smart, white-on-black dining room, while street food and quirky cocktails are the main business in the lounge bar. London now has many upmarket Indian restaurants but it still takes some getting used to — an Indian that doesn’t automatically offer you a Cobra or a Kingfisher while you wait and has a Margaux on the wine list for £995, and makes a point of saying its chutneys are homemade... We were shown the tasting menu for £69 a pop and went for the à la carte. We also roamed round the wine list, ignoring the bottles that might sit comfortably with someone picking up a gleaming limousine from next door and settling for a bottle of Sula Zinfandel from near Mumbai (£23.50).Read more…
