The Independent Says...
Go to the Pont for the best summer-evening view in London dinerland...We liked the views of the City – the red lights like eyes at the top of the Gherkin, the glowing blue of the Lloyds building. A shame, we agreed, that the Shard owners couldn't be arsed to put it in our sight-lines. The menu was full of classic French dishes – foie gras ballotine, lobster thermidor, veal kidney flambé à la moutarde – interspersed with solid British fare (tian of Dorset crab, Colchester rock oysters).
If weather allows, the only place better than a window seat is the riverside terrace, where fruits de mer from the seafood bar feels particularly appropriate. Otherwise, classical Gallic cuisine holds sway...“Impeccable service” from smartly dressed waiters, a hefty tome of wines (both well-priced and aspirational) and “great ambience” boosted by a pianist in the lively Bar & Grill next door, complete what is a seriously luxurious proposition.
The long riverside dining room is elegant if a little soulless, but the setting is picture-perfect: dining on the outside terrace with a view of Tower Bridge feels like posing for a London tourist brochure. Cynics might expect the food to disappoint. It didn’t. The lunch and dinner menu du jour offers great bang for buck, with many dishes lifted from the carte.
