Time Out Says...
An alchemist’s laboratory of tinctures, potions and spirits dominates the tiny and sometimes frenetic front room...the cocktails are expertly made: the Georgetown Negroni balances smoky aromas with the depth of El Dorado rum and ‘charcoaled’ Campari. There are wines and beers too, but the reason to come here is for the expertly made cocktails – the best SW9 has seen. Yup, Brixton’s changing all right.
The Shrub and Shutter, the first project from the guys at Salt of the Earth consultancy, has really earnt its experimental badge. Cocktails are served with wondrous food pairings that would look good on their own: a chicken stock broth with tomato, mint, pickle, peas, asparagus, chicken skin and crispy bacon, for instance, is the force behind a stiff Snow Queen Vodka.
Further up from the ‘hip and happening’ and a little before the ‘rough and ready’ you’ll find a bar that takes cocktails to the next level. With 22 cocktails as well as specials on the blackboard it’s obvious these guys like to experiment; each is filled with unique flavours and crazy pairings.
