What makes H & P worth a trip back to the age of steam are the cocktails, which look to the West Indies for inspiration. Many preparations, liqueurs and bitters are made in-house – try the Regal Roberts, made with earl grey-infused gin, vanilla sugar and lemon; Our Grog, a Caribbean mixture of rums with falernum syrup and bitters, will have you drooling in the right way. All are served in striking cut glasses, all are strong, suave and precise.

The fun is in the fantasy elements: cocktails (around £9) are opulently outlandish and “train conductors” (waiters) sporting gold name badges in the shape of flying scarab beetles will show you to your seat. Order the fresh, simple Dark and Stormy, made with Goslings Black Seal 151 rum, homemade ginger beer and lime juice. A treat.

Is this a bar, or an opulent train carriage travelling express from Cape Town to Cairo? Either way this place is pretty damn cool.The décor is all House of Hackney print pillows, Art Deco mirrors, olive green armchairs and decadent, glass lampshades, plus throw in a bit of jungle and you have yourself a hit. We were here for the drink and the long wooden, classic bar that has a fury of activity behind it which is exactly what we like to see.
