50 Best Bars 2015

Jane Ryan | 08/10/2015

Each year an academy of international voters select the world's 50 best bars. This year more London venues made the cut than any other city.

Well they did it again. London bar Artesian has retained its title as king of the list this year, once more beating New York's Dead Rabbit to the first spot. And just as Artesian has triumped so has England's captial which is still holding its own again the Big Apple with nine bars to New Yorks eight - even with the new and expanded academy of voters.

50 BEST BARS

50 Best Bars is an incredible prestigious list to be on. A quick glance will give you a whos who of the cocktail world, from Singapore to New York. But beneath the glamour of the awards night, the thrill of owners whose bars are called out for their excellence before all the industry and the dissapointment of those who slide down or off the list, for there are certainly more than 50 amazing bars in the world, is a deeper look into the styles of bars which are capturing our attention, the cities which we're travelling to and the fickle nature of opening a venue.

The list is made by a poll from industry peers worldwide, and while it's run by Drinks International they don't currate the list. For 2015 this Academy of voters was expanded from 334 to 412. Each member is asked to name five bars, in order of preference and Drinks Interntional then add a weighting to each vote, so bar number one is worth a tiny bit more than bar number two, continuing incrementally down to bar five. This enables them to discriminate between bars that have received the same number of votes. After the votes are in the list is then established. Who are these voters? As the 50 Best team says they are "the discerning drinkers and deep thinkers of the international bar industry – the most exacting of barflies." Most crucially the Academy has voters from 117 bar scenes and 53 countries - meaning the list is continuing to expand globally.

But is it representive of what's really going on in our cities? London has seen a huge boom in neighbourhood cocktail bars. Places like Original Sin, Satan's Whiskers, Sovereign Loss and Silk Stockings, which opened the night of the awards, - great classic bars dedicated to their neighbours which don't necessarily see representation on such lists.

"I think the classic bars are hard to dislodge - American Bar and modern classics such as 69 Colebrooke Row, The Connaught Bar, Artesian - so I wouldn't go as far as to say they have had their day. In fact there are more in the list than last year (Beaufort and Dandelyan, Broken Shaker, Manhattan Singapore, Lobster Bar, Elephant Bar and Nomad Bar), but I agree that the neighbourhood bar trend is happening simultaneously. It's funny that neighbourhood bars in the US make the list but not those from London," says organiser Hamish Smith.
