Bar Awards – Measuring Cocktail Success

25/08/2016

There are no Michelin Guides in the bartending world - instead success is measured by a wide variety of awards.

50 Best Bars

This peer-nominated poll charts through the current 50 best bars globally each October. The voters assembled are called the Academy and to qualify for that you have to travel extensively across the globe for work and be a part of the booze industry in some way, whether you're a bartender, bar owner, work for a brand or a drinks journalist. The Academy members then name their five favourite bars in the world, in order of preference. The bar voted for must be open. It must have been visited in the past two years and the voter must have no financial interest in or have worked in the bar for at least a year. Drinks International, the organisers, also ask that two of the five choices be international, ie not based in the country of the voter’s residence. This poll is hugely influential in the industry and it's a matter of pride to stay on the list years after opening - new bars always tend to grab the industries attention over old favourites.

Spirited Awards - Tales of the Cocktail

In 2007, Tales of the Cocktail, a large booze industry event in New Orleans each July, created the Spirited Awards to recognise some of the best bars and bar talent from the United States and around the world. The awards are a little strange in that they are divded between American and the rest of the world, so London competes with every international city while the US venues compete amoung themselves. However these awards are still incredibly prestigious and are judged by a panel of industry experts. Categories include Best American/International Bar Team, American/International Bartender of the Year, Best American/International Cocktail Bar, Best American/International High Volume Cocktail Bar, Best American/International Hotel Bar, Best American/International Restaurant Bar, Best New American/International Cocktail Bar.

Time Out Bar Awards

In 2016 Time Out decided they had sufficently covered London's bar scene for long enough to launch their own awards. It was judged by industry experts – four drinks journalists, two award-winning bartenders and the founder of London Cocktail Week. Categories included Bar of the Year, Best New Bar, Best Bartender or Bar Team, Most Stylish Bar, Hippest Bar, Most Creative Bar and Classiest Bar.

GQ Food + Drink Awards

Launched in 2015, the GQ Awards represent a true consumer award listing which are judged by a panel of experts. Working from a shortlist of fantastic venues the judges then narrow down the winners with categories such as Best Restaurant, Best Bar, Best Chef, Best Front Of House, Best Interior, Best Hotel, Best Restaurateur and Best Overall Experience.
