Explored: Ten Bars To Get You Out Of Your Area

Whether you only drink East, South or in the City, here are five bars that’ll have you reaching for your oyster card.

Unwined - SW17

undefined

Where: Unit 16a, Tooting Market, 21-23 Tooting High Street, London, SW17 0SN
Why bother: "Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the former pop-up A Grape Night In has settled into permanent premises. Unwined in Tooting serves as a wine shop, bar and restaurant. They have a changing roster of monthly pop-ups, and services include a monthly or bi-monthly wine box delivery and wine courses at the shop." - Time Out

Hops & Glory - N1

undefined

Where: 382 Essex Road, London, N1 3PF
Why bother: "Hops & Glory is full of the sort of things that make pubs good. Buffed-leather sofas, a big mirror behind the bar, candles. A blackboard lists the current selection of 13 beers on tap and 60 in bottle, and a fine selection it is. London brews get a good look-in, which is always welcome: a pint of the limited-release Camden Cavalier was particularly well received." - Time Out

Martello Hall - E8

undefined

Where: 137 Mare Street, London, E8 3RH
Why bother: "What makes this place particularly worth a visit is the impressive drinks, including a regularly changing array of 12 wines on tap, gin distilled on site and a swell cocktail list. An Apples & Pears Collins with pear vodka and homemade elderflower syrup was refreshing and tangy, like sucking on a citrusy peardrop. A Mexican Negroni with El Jimador tequila and Aperitivo Berto was rich and strong – a knockout. Should you come here hungry, you can munch on superlative, crispy-based wood-fired pizzas, with interesting toppings like honey and truffled pecorino (pizzas and snacks are also served through a hatch at the side of the building)." - Time Out

Every Cloud - E9

undefined

Where: 11 Morning Lane, London, E9 6ND
Why bother: "Blink and you might miss this tiny cocktail bar, but that's part of Every Cloud's charm. Yes, it serves fancy cocktails but the bar is more about chilled-out gatherings and date nights. We love the quirky decor, which combines colourful wallpaper with simple furniture, while the cocktail list is full of original and refreshing drinks - keep an eye out for the bartenders' special mixes." - Design My Night

Italian Job - W4

undefined

Where: 13 Devonshire Road, London, W4 2EU
Why bother: "Birra artigianale means ‘craft beer’ in Italian.Twenty years ago there were zero birrifici making the stuff; today Italy has more than 400. These brews now have a showcase in Chiswick, the first of its type...The Italian Job is worth travelling to, though I’d leave my Mini Cooper at home. And if I went by coach, I’d make sure the driver laid off the Verdi Imperial Stout at 8.2 percent abv. Who wants a quiet pint to end on a cliffhanger?" - Time Out

Soif - SW11

undefined

Where: 27 Battersea Rise, London, SW11 1HG
Why bother: "I hope the locals realise what a gem they have here. The meaty Soif is by far the best restaurant in the strip of eateries on this side of Battersea Rise. It comfortably surpasses the others; in fact, from their point of view, you might even say it was beaty. The bill is not big. You will leave feeling bouncy." - The Guardian

GinTonica At The Distillery - W11

undefined

Where: 186 Portobello Road, London, W11 1LA
Why bother: "Gintonica bar offers a fantastic array of Spanish fare – the tapas menu features succulent inka grilled tiger prawns, artisan chorizo sizzling in shallots or well-seasoned patatas bravas served with aioli. With about as many drink choices as dishes, pick the Portobello Road Gin 171 cocktail to expect a goblet of Nordic Mist Blue Tonic peppered with grapefruit marmalade and spiced with hop bitters." - The Telegraph

East London Liqueur Company - E3

undefined

Where: Unit GF1, 221 Grove Road, London, E3 5SN
Why bother: "Bright and airy with simple décor, this place has got a certain classiness. And yes, you may have noticed the super shiny, big f*ck off copper stills at the back of the bar behind glass windows screaming for attention – these guys don’t just make great drinks, they also distil their own gin, vodka and whisky on site!" - Barchick

Ladies & Gents - NW5

undefined

Where: 2 Highgate Road, London, NW5 1NR
Why bother: "These are quality drinks made by friendly, bearded bar staff who are happy to go off menu. Extra marks for some seriously beautiful glassware and quirky extras like a Werther’s Original with your Gentleman’s Old Fashioned. It's cosy, well-lit and has a huge selection of second-hand books for if you fancy flicking through a Jilly Cooper while you sip. Only the cisterns on the wall remind you that you’re in an old loo." - Evening Standard

José - SE1

undefined

Where: 104 Bermondsey St, London SE1 3UB
Why bother: "To be fair, you're lucky to get any seat in this tiny Bermondsey bar but if you do manage to grab a spot at the counter you will be privaledged to watch giant legs of cured meat sliced up, cheese being plated, wine flowing freely and sherry being carefully measured out." - DrinkUp
