A new cocktail menu: Waeska Bar at The Mandrake Hotel

Sitting al fresco on a Tuesday evening in the height of London summer doesn't get much better, unless you're sitting al fresco in the height of London summer in one of the city’s best hotel bars.

The Mandrake Hotel, in the heart of London’s West End, opened less than 12 months ago and it has already made itself quite the reputation. Walking down Newman Street you could easily walk past the dark entrance without realising that what lies within is a luxurious boutique hotel and bar. But if you’re in the know (which you now are - you’re welcome!), you’ll turn off the street, head down the hallway and find yourself in this sumptuously decorated space with lush furnishings of velvet couches, draping curtains slightly covering floor to ceiling windows and striking fixtures with perfectly placed artwork.

#interiorgoals aside head forward to the Waeska Bar that overlooks their lush evergreen outdoor courtyard, pull up a pew and settle in. We visited this Tuesday evening gone to try their new cocktail menu. The staff on hand were incredibly helpful, informative and attentive. Taking us through their curated menu which aims to use ingredients with health benefits, from the Mandrake plant which the hotel is aptly named after to Calamos syrup and sage, each cocktail bringing something different, something unique and something beneficial to the table.

While we were hosted at the bar we tried 6 different cocktails from a menu of 12 – a sterling effort! Luckily the cocktails aren’t too punchy so you can enjoy a few more without getting too wobbly. Each drink we tried was delicate, delicious, and very very different to the last.

The cocktails we tried were:
Mandrake - Grey Goose Vodka, Cocchi Americano, Clarified Milk, Mandrake Essence
Pine - Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Martini Ambrato, Pine Needles, Shiitake, Ginjo Sake, Mastiha
Palo Santo - Tapatio Blanco Tequila, Palo Santo Wood, Panella & Kola Nut Soda, Lime Juice
Calamos - Star of Bombay Gin. Calamos Syrup, Italicus, Blood Orange Sake, Grapefruit Bitters
Sage - Gem&Bolt, Damiana Mezcal, Saged St. Germain Elderflower, Tomato Water, Dry Sherry
Passion  Flower - Acqua di Cedro, Jasmine & Passion Flower Infusion, Clear Clementine Juice, Ruinart Champagne

While some of the ingredients might sound foreign - they are - the bar staff on hand will happily talk you through what they are, how they go together with the other ingredients of the drink and will give a detailed explanation on what they taste like and if it will suit your flavour palette.

When you overhear the table behind say “the service here is the best i've ever had in London, that’s why I keep coming back” you know it has to be pretty alright. Whether you’re a city dweller or you fancy a trip into the busy West End, The Mandrake Hotel and Waeska Bar are well worth the visit, oh and be sure to use the loos while you’re there - we won’t give it away, just trust us.
