DRINKUP STAYCATION: THE STANDARD

A brand spanking new hotel has sprung up in King’s Cross and it’s got us mighty excited. Yes, it’s maybe a little later than planned, but with a top notch restaurant and bar from Adam Rawson, some gloriously decorated rooms and more culinary delights from Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias on the way, we can absolutely forgive that! We take a look inside at what to expect from the much-anticipated opening of US-famed, The Standard.

This exciting London opening is a first for The Standard outside of the USA and aims to bring their ethos of a hotel that can deliver more than just a place to sleep over to us Brits. Housed in the former Camden Town Hall Annex in bustling King's Cross, the 1974 building has been meticulously restored with everything thought out to the tiniest of details and breathtaking, colourful interiors from Shawn Hausman.

THE ROOMS
The hotel boasts two hundred and sixty six rooms in forty two unique styles ranging from Cosy Core rooms to terraced suites with outdoor bathtubs overlooking St Pancras station. There's a nod to 'California cool' in the decor, with bright pops of colour and funky pod-like windows that survey the city.

Each room features super comfy beds, Italian sheets, fluffy down pillows and bespoke robes to curl up in and enjoy the huge TV and Bang & Olufsen bluetooth speaker, whilst sipping on something from the overstocked minibar.

And when you're feeling peckish you can head to...

ISLA
All-day restaurant Isla, will offer laid-back, elegant dining from a seasonal menu with a predominantly minimal intervention wine list. Integrated with the lobby and library, Isla also gently spills out to the garden terrace, complete with retractable awning - perfect for long al-fresco meals.

Punchy blues and greens jump off partly-carpeted walls in this space, creating an electric environment. Intertwined with plants, red fixtures and a blue bar that wouldn't look out of place in a 60s movie.

DOUBLE STANDARD
The second part of the hotel from Adam Rawson is the Double Standard - a bar that introduces you to The Standard’s mischievousness and holds pride of place on the ground floor. With a menu inspired by traditional pub classics and NYC dive bar food, it will serve craft beers, wine and classic cocktails alongside Adam’s menu running late into the night.

Heavy-set wooden doors, textured glass and TfL-inspired upholstery will encapsulate the cosy feeling of a British local, whilst pastel tiled flooring, rounded soft pink shelving and an exposed felt ceiling add a modern and playful feel to the space.

IN THE REST OF THE HOTEL
The reception area has a tiled turquoise feature wall by ceramics artist Lubna Chowdhary, printed with dark blue and blood-red circles and a grooved timber reception desk.

And there is also the lobby lounge, which has a carefully curated library that pays homage to the building’s original use, with a Sounds studio hosting weekly live music and talks.
