Time Out Says... "Expect a long wine list that looks like it's been carefully thought through. Old world options dominate, though there is a focus on bottles from the States. Beer by the bottle comes from Four Pure, Madness, Rio Brewing Co. and Kiuchi Hitachino. Cocktails sound intriguing – think fino sherry with dill pollen liqueur, lemon and soda, rye whisky with burnt maple syrup, mezcal and walnut bitters, or an old fashioned with olive oil bourbon."
The Londonist Says... "We're in two minds about this place. Not because it's lacking in any way, but is it a pub? Tucked in a backstreet beneath the rail arches, it's much more bar-like than pubbish, and self-describes as a taproom. Yet it stocks a phenomenal range of ales and ciders, so we feel duty-bound to include it. To hell with definitions...it's going in the Best Pubs database."
Barchick Says... "A seriously good neighbourhood bar in a not so sexy neighbourhood… Satan’s Whiskers is the sort of place that puts a big smile on BarChick’s face...The well-considered cocktail list includes such treats as the frightfully good A&B sour (Amaretto, lemon, sugar, Bookers Bourbon) and the Apple Jack Rabbit (Calvados, lemon, orange juice, maple syrup and the glass has a cinnamon sugar rim). Hit it weeknights for a chilled one or Thursday – Sunday for hip-hop, dirty dancing and smooth chat, sold."
Best Bars Says... "Taking a casual approach in setting, this unassuming pub on Bethnal Green Road is pure magic inside. The dim, narrow, candelit space is equal parts cool and sexy with an L-shaped bar that’s lit up with some of the snazziest lanterns we’ve seen around. This is another page ripped straight off the New York City playbook, striking that perfect balance of Irish dive bar-meets-cocktail den."
Barchick Says... "The naughty cocktail crew are now causing trouble in Bethnal Green. And this one’s mega. Firstly ‘cos there’s a massive outside area (the first LCC to have one, booya), plus they’re big on gin here. Now that’s a winning combo. There’s a ‘derelict train yard’ theme going on so expect to get comfy on TFL sofas (in case you were missing your commute already) and get lost with cocktail tube maps. The cocktails are LCC party starting classics and when BarChick came to play they shook up an epic 8 Daiquiris in one go with their giant cocktail shaker. You definitely won’t leave this place thirsty."
Evening Standard Says... "Experimental mixologist Matt Whiley is behind this new bar dealing in inventive cocktails at the old Bethnal Green Town Hall. It shares the space with hot new restaurant the Typing Rooms. Each cocktail is not just a cocktail, it’s a whole taste experience (as you’d expect for between £8 and £10 a glass)."
