Splashing Out in Shoreditch
Hoi Polloi at the Ace Hotel
100 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6JQ
Mon-Wed 07.00-00.00 Thu-Sat 07.00-01.00 Sun 07.00-00.00
Arrive between 5:30 – 7pm. Step through the inviting florist, already exuding scents of freshly cut stems and a light fragrance of lilies, on Shoreditch High Street to Hoi Polloi’s restaurant bar. Announced on a newspaper menu, the drinks list is quirky enough to satisfy those well-versed in cocktails, combining new-world spirits such as smoky mezcal with quintessential British notes such as lavender. Perch in a booth and admire the elegant wood panelling and modern lighting before scents coming from the open kitchen become too tantalizing and dinner calls.
The Clove Club
Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LT
Mon-Sat 18.00-23.30 Sun CLOSED
Arrive between 7 – 9pm. Recently awarded its Michelin Star, and rightly so, this modern British restaurant is tucked behind the romantic facade of the Town Hall. Guests enter past the larder filled with cured meats and stinky cheese, so before even sitting in the rather Spartan dining room, taste buds are running wild. Course after course of imaginative flavours, perfectly cooked seafood, game and fresh produce and a wine list to dive into makes Clove Club worth every penny. Full, but never grotesquely, the food has finally stopped arriving and it’s time for a nightcap. Please note this restaurant must be booked.
8-9 Hoxton Square, London, N1 6NU
Mon-Wed 17.00-23.00 Thu 17.00-23.30 Fri-Sat 17.00-00.00 Sun 17.00-23.00
Last orders at 11pm Monday - Wednesday. A small, no standing, firm favourite with locals, this bar is accessed down a rickety flight of stairs, leading to a dimly-lit shabby-chic, intimate space. Consistently offering a buzzy yet chilled atmosphere it's easy to see why the place is generally packed. Whether sat at the bar, which dominates the room, or secluded in corner, this New York-inspired bar is ideal to try something new in hands of great staff. Fortified wine cocktails are a must for a lighter approach or dive in the deep end with potentially one of London’s best Penicillins, smokey Scotch, lemon, honey and ginger. And that is surely the ultimate nightcap.
