Expensive and luxurious: celebrate the art of five-star service.

West London's Five-Star Hotel Bars

Jane Ryan
Luxuriate in the opulence and comfort of London’s old-world hotels. These stunning landmark buildings, each with their own splendid history, are some of the last bastions of a more glamorous age in hospitality and service. Yet some of them have taken a decidedly modern twist of late. Sip on classics, dine on the freshest of foods and see just how the old ways have meet modern hospitality in London.
  • Start here

    Coburg bar at The Connaught

The Connaught, Carlos Place, London, W1K 2AL

    Mon 8am-11pm Tue-Sat 8am-1am Sun 8am-11pm

Arrive between 5-7pm. While its sibling bar at the Connaught Hotel may be the more famous, the Coburg Bar feels more intimate. The small room is superbly designed and sinking into a plush armchair, nestled in one of the corners, is an act of ultimate indulgence. Work your way through its well-executed classic cocktails - representing the best of drinking over the last two centuries - or order a glass of champagne and admire the old-school elegance of the space.

  • Move On

    Fera at Claridge's

    49 Brook Street, London, W1K 4HR

    Mon-Sun Midday-2.30pm & 6.30pm-10pm

Book between 7-9pm. Food is rarely described by restaurant critics as faultless, but that's just one accolade given to the tasting menu at Fera. Expect dishes such as native lobster with new potatoes, black garlic, roast barley broth and chicken wing or cornish lamb with sheep milk, white asparagus, ramsons and alliums with a sumptuous list of desserts including compressed strawberries with sweet cicely custard, buttermilk and sorrel. Cocktails come from the innovative Matt Wiley - better known for his bar Peg + Patriot and there's a terrific wine list. Set in such a beautiful room with excellent service, this is a terrifically modern adaptation of five-star dining. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

  • End Here

    Artesian at the Langham

    1C Portland Place, London, W1B 1JA

    Mon-Sat 11am-2am Sun Midday-Midnight

Arrive by 11pm. Voted the best bar in the world for three consecutive years between 2012-14, this is perhaps London's most modern five-star hotel bar. Service is still impeccable, in fact it can be some of most enthusiastic and charming in the capital, and the room is unmistakably luxurous - if lighter and brighter than many of its counterparts. What sets Artesian up as a thoroughly modern bar is its menus. Cocktails served in novel, bespoke glassware, drinks which harness not just the taste buds but use deceptive aromas and are a visual treat. This is mixology and art combined and the results are fantastic. Order from the menu and throw back some mezcal shots until the early morning. You'll be well looked after.
