A Taste of Terroir

Jane Ryan
Terroir is a huge concept - one which increases in complexity the more you discuss it. Is it the soil, the sunshine, the water, the microscopic bacteria on the vines, does it include the winemaker and how they tend to their grapes? Yet it certainly exists. Wines separated by a valley, a river, even a road, taste differently and the only way to discover this is happily to drink delicious wines which smack of their surroundings. These excellent London bars will help you on the way to understanding terroir, and even if they fail you'll still have enjoyed some exceptional bottelings.

    51 Lamb’s Conduit Street, London, WC1N 3NB

    Times

    Mon-Sat Midday-11pm Sun CLOSED

Noble Rot is a fantastic contrast of old and new - the very building is Grade 2 listed and dates back as far as 1700, it's steeped in history and filled to the brim with period features, oozing with the kind of warmth you can only find in a really old London bar, while the walls are adorned with brightly coloured pop-art prints of the magazine’s iconic artwork, giving the venue a big stamp of Noble Rot’s trademark wit and contemporary style. The latest edition of Noble Rot magazine was all about volcanic wines so right now is the perfect time to swing by and explore an unusual terroir which conveys flavours straight from mineral vineyards to the glass.

    Sager + Wilde Hackney Road

    Location

    193 Hackney Road, London, E2 8JL

    Times

    Mon-Fri 5pm-Midnight Sat-Sun 2pm-Midnight

Sager + Wilde is a very special place for several reasons. First and foremost is its wine offering. A daily list charts through the available glasses of which there is always the outstanding, the spectacular and the surprising. These are serious, beautiful wines available by the glass. Dig in, ask and get acquainted with terroir. Secondly is the intimate, comfortable and relaxing vibe of this visually stunning bar. Its counter top is old London pavement slabs, tapper candles throw a flickering glow over the bar and brick work is a warm, rusty brown. Thirdly is dedication of the staff, always eager to help with your decisions and let you sample different wines. Lastly - the cheese toasties are out of this world.
