Cocktails in Brixton

Jane Ryan
South of the river - and further south again - the cocktails are just as well-executed, experimental and tasty as those across the capital. But there's a subtle difference drinking in heart of Brixton compared to anywhere else, something to do with it's infectious fun. You'll have a party whether or not you were searching for one. London's changing all right - and the south is one of the best places to be.
  • Start here

    The Shrub & Shutter

    Location

    336 Cold Harbour Lane, London, SW9 8QH

    Times

    Mon CLOSED Tue 5pm-Midnight Wed-Thu 5pm-1am Fri 5pm-3am Sat Midday-3am Sun 5pm-Midday

Arrive between 5pm-7pm. Cocktails at The Shrub & Shutter have been described as the best SW9 has to offer, which - given the sudden explosion of fantastic bars in the area - is saying something. The small front room looks closer to an alchemist’s laboratory complete with tinctures, potions and spirits, but it's simultaneously bright and comfortable. All the drinks taste completely unique, a testament to the experiments of the bartenders and it's advisable to place your trust in them and listen to recommendations. Try the food pairings and revel in the charming character of this little bar.

  • End Here

    Three Eight Four

    Location

    384 Coldharbour Lane, London, SW9 8LF

    Times

    Mon-Wed 5pm-Midnight, Fri 5pm-2am, Sat 11am- 2am, Sun 11am-Midnight

Arrive between 7pm-9pm. You're here for dinner but be sure to try a house cocktail alongside whatever combination of the delicious grazing menu you put together. Everything is in small portions so pick a few and tuck into the filling food, which is essentially very good, well-executed fast food. The sticky ribs are particularly noteworthy, as is the reuben slider and the ’nduja with ricotta and quail’s egg on toast. As for drinks, the bartenders here can manage about any classic you throw their way, but the true joy lies in the house drinks. The Apricot Sazerac is great for those who enjoy and sharp, short drink or try the Cress For Thyme for something lighter.
