London on Christmas Day

Jane Ryan
London on Christmas day. You hear rumours of an eerily empty city centre, a London ghost town where the monuments stand abandoned. Somewhat sadly no international city ever really shuts down though, and London on the 25th of December keeps on ticking over. Which does mean if you're celebrating an orphans Christmas in the capital this year (or can drag your family away from food comas on the couch) you can enjoy a homemade roast Turkey followed by an expertly made Martini in some of the world's best bars.
  • Start here

    Punch Room at The Edition

The London Edition, 10 Berners Street, London, W1T 3NP

    Mon-Sun 5pm-1am

It'll be a sleepy day at The Edition Hotel this Christmas, especially in their gentleman club-styled Punch Room where the deep armchairs are flanked by a cosy fire place and the plush banquette seating is ideal to relax against and relish in your food coma. Order a glass of punch (or a bowl if you've brought family and friends) and sip this perfect Christmassy cocktail. It's cosy, intimate and going to get boozy but don't get too settled as we're taking a crisp walk down to Charing Cross and paying a visit to that wonderful hotel - The Savoy.

  • Move On

    Beaufort Bar at The Savoy

The Savoy Hotel, Carting Lane, London, WC2R 0EU

    Mon-Sat 5pm-1am Sun CLOSED

The Savoy on Christmas Day is a place of quiet luxury and we're headed for the dark and luxurious Beaufort Bar. Disregard the opening hours above, this bar will only be open from 2pm-10pm on the 25th, which suits us just just fine. Normally we try and snag one of the few seats at the bar but today it's Christmas and we're headed for a relaxing armchair and something strong and whisky-based. Let the hours slide by as you enjoy the well-made cocktails and the dark gilded room. Before you completely fall asleep we've one last stop to make. Which means heading out the Thames-side exit and walking across the river - a magical site on Christmas Night.

  • End Here

Mondrian Hotel, 22 Upper Ground, London, SE1 9PD

    Mon-Thu 4pm-1am Fri-Sat Midday-1.30am Sun Midday-12.30am

Those floor-to-ceiling windows gazing out to St Paul's Cathedral are the absolute cherry on the cake for this Christmas Tour. Crisp and deep and even indeed. We're starting with something enlivening from their botany-themed menu and seeking more bone-relaxing armchairs as we enjoy the last few hours of Christmas. If you've found your stomach slowly emptying over the evening then order a few snacks before staggering to Blackfriars for that uber home. Merry Christmas.
