A Bartender's Night Off...

Chris Dennis
Around 12 months ago, my now business partner suggested we put a plan together and open a bar in Brixton. Now, I’ve worked all around London; Ladbroke Grove to Richmond, Camden, Soho and pretty much anywhere with a postcode that begins with an ‘E’. So naturally a new location was something to look forward to, especially in an environment that not only embraces small businesses, but is home to a cultural melting pot that allows a unique perspective of this fine city. Brixton has always had it going on and the sheer quantity of new venues that have materialised over the last year has been spectacular. It’s been a real pleasure to be part of such a strong part of town, and, after some serious thought and a little debating, here is a night off in my neck of the woods.
  • Start here

    Agile Rabbit

    Unit 24, Brixton Village Market , Coldharbour Lane London , SW9 8PR

First stop is generally to fill a hole after a long day…there is nowhere to do so like Brixton Village and Market Row. Each tiny business makes up a smorgasbord of foodie delights. While, pretty much everything is absolutely nothing less than scrumptious, I’ll be at Agile Rabbit, enjoying their live music, stone baked pizza, tasty and cheerfully priced wine list and maybe finishing up with a Negroni or two.

  • Move On

    The Shrub & Shutter

    336 Cold Harbour Lane, London, SW9 8QH

    Mon CLOSED Tue 5pm-Midnight Wed-Thu 5pm-1am Fri 5pm-3am Sat Midday-3am Sun 5pm-Midday

Next its time to head over to The Shrub and Shutter. Picture a highly skilled team crafting libations with strong themes, pop culture references and playful twists in a bar that fits into an especially innovative space. With the gem of a garden at the back and the kitchen worktop out-front, which blurs the lines between kitchen and bar, it means it’s always a cherished experience. I’ll be drinking a ‘Sexy Little Swine’, think Chilean pisco and green apples, maybe with something tasty from one of the chefs, and certainly with a shot of rum or two. Extra activities include a bathroom that provides a Sharpie for evolutionary decoration.

  • End Here

    The Wine Parlour

    1 & 3 Vining Street, SW9 8QA

    Mon-Tue 4pm - late Wed-Sat Midday - late Sun 1pm - late

Rounding the night off is a trip to The Wine Parlour for a glass of something delicious in the form of pretty much anything made from grapes accompanied by charcuterie sliced and plated directly in front you (try the wild boar, ya’ know?). It’s an intimate space which also sells takeaway bottles. The super qualified members of the team are happy to recommend something to slip into your bag and take home so that you can have a tasty nightcap in the peace and quiet of your own living room.
