21st September - 27th September

The Cocktail: Negroni Robusto

What is it?

The Robusto is the most recent addition to Bar Termini's fabulous Nergoni range, all of which are pre-made, aged and served in miniature custom-made glasses without ice so the flavour stays consistently perfect. This fourth Negroni follows the same recipe as the Classico, but it is cooked sous vide for four hours. It's intense, rich and incredibly smooth.

Small and offering a taste of that famed La Dolce Vita, Bar Termini is an intimate single room dominated by the light eau de nil banquettes and rich wood tables. The drinks here are nothing to drown in, making it the perfect spot to sip and digest. 

The Wine: Viognier 2013, Cline Cellars, California, US 

What is it?

It’s tough finding decent Viognier from California, and even tougher finding it in restaurants in GB. However, the Modern Pantry has put the delicious Cline Cellars on their list, and it’s a wonderful, heady array of white peach, apricots and honey but with a nice zip and zing on the finish to make it wonderfully refreshing.

A new fusion restaurant in Clerkenwell that makes the most of unusual ingredients sourced from around the globe. Boasting a well-executed cocktail menu as well as this fabulous wine list, it's already drawing in fantastic reviews. 

The Beer: Bristol Beer Factory Ultimate Stout 

What is it?

Strong stout with a twist - think hints of coffee, chocolate and dark fruits. Made using a Belgian yeast and roasted malts, the real ale is fermented in the bottle making it alive, unfiltered and unpasteurised. It's especially delicious when when paired with blue cheese or a chocolate dessert.

A Shoreditch stalwart, Strongroom has a relaxed vibe and decor giving it a lived in atmosphere. With an awesome beer list and good music it's remained popular throughout its impressive 20 years of business. Perfect for a laid back pint. 

 

 

14th September - 20th September

The Cocktail: Slap n’ Pickle

What is it?

A great savoury cocktail which combines gin, Wolfschmitt kummel, apricot brandy, lemon juice and house pickle brine, garnished with a three-pickle shortstack. This cocktail is a fantastic medley of sharp flavours, with the salty brine putting a different twist on the subtle apricot brandy. One to try before dinner as a pleasant aperitif or a bracing pick-me-up afterwards.

Where can I drink it?

Blind Pig at Social Eating House.

The delightful cocktail bar perched above Jason Atherton’s Soho restaurant is a destination spot in its own right. Boasting New York loft-style windows, comfortable leather booths and a playful drinks menu, the bar is elegant and incredibly well-executed. Nothing too fancy, and easily one of the best spots on Soho.

Wine: 2011 Mahi, Chardonnay, Marlborough, NZ.

What is it?

This is a stunning Chardonnay from New Zealand. It’s got all that NewWorld zip and zing, but with the refinement of a decent Montrachet and almost as much body to boot. Really creamy, rich and deliciously nutty but with a freshness that belies its four years in the bottle. Worth splashing out on and no mistake.

Where can I drink it?

Kopapa, Covent Garden.

Kopapa is a charming restaurant co-owned by Peter Gordon who is often considered the master of fusion food, so if you’re here to eat as well as drink expect some elegant flavour combinations. The wine list has a nod to old world European styles but this is one of London's best venues to enjoy New Zealand varieties including some excellent Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, some of which comes from Waitaki Braids - Kopapa’s Peter Gordon and Michael McGrath co-ownered vineyard.

Beer: Hackney Hopster

What is it?

A truly tasty pacific pale ale which a great citrus taste of grapefruit, lemon zest and gooseberry, finising with a dry and fresh palate. Sitting at a comfortable 4.2% this ale is made with a mix of New Zealand and US hops, specifically Magnum, Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, Pacifica and Pacific Jade before being dry hopped again with Pacifica, Pacific Jade. An exceedingly refreshing, young and easy-to-drink beer.

Ask for Janice.

A cafe-cum-bar opposite Smithfield’s meat market, Ask for Janice has a warm rustic vibe with desk-like tables and wooden stools, white washed brick walls and a modern art pieces. In addition to the seven draughts on tap there are over 50 bottles to choose from so don’t stop with the Hackney Hopster. 

 

 

7th September - 13th September

The Cocktail: ​Baron Samedi

What is it?

A perfect mix of rum, marmalade, cider syrup and lemon, served straight up. The tart citrus blends with sweeter flavours in this balanced drink from bartender Cyan Wong.

Where can I drink it?

In Original Sin.

Descend down to this local Stoke Newington bar, complete with a pool table, deep leather booths and stunning brick features, to spend a happy evening working your way through the drinks list. Serving a good selection of beers, wines and plenty of tasty whisky, alongside the well-crafted cocktails, Original Sin is an easy spot to gather with friends, take a few shots - at the pool table or the bar - and enjoy what is essentially a very good bar. Nothing too ostentatious, nothing overworked. 

The Wine: Hart Brother's Special Selection Manzanilla pasada en Rama

What is it?

Crisp, clean with a faint hint of salty flor, it's the perfect sherry to kick start any seafood fest off in great style. Awesome with their stuffed courgette flower or delicious soft shell crab - or both.! 

Where can I drink it?

At Barrafina

Sam and Eddie Hart who own and run the lovely Barrafina restaurants have had this Manazanill pasada made specially for them and it's an absolute doosey. Try it at any of their restaurants for £36, (70cl) or £6 a glass.

The Beer: Hophead from Dark Star Brewing Co.

What is it?

This pale golden ale is makes for a clean drink with its strong floral aroma and elderflower notes - coming from the Cascade hops. While full-bodied and full-flavoured it is sitll gentle enough to make it a favourite session beer.

Where can I drink it?

The Gunmakers.

A small, old-fashioned pub in Clerkenwell which pumps out great food and has a rotating list of beers on tap. As the evening sets in this little bar can become full of happy imbibers, chucking down the food and drinks, making for a real convivial ambience. Utterly charming. 

 

 

31st August - 6th September

The Cocktail: Earth

What is it?

Smoky, earthy mezcal is complimented by the sweet and fresh flavours of watermelon and strawberry. A smoked seaweed Riesling helps draw out the minerality of the mezcal and a dash of habanero hellfire shrub adds a little heat. Essentially a smooth, balanced sipping cocktail with earthy, spicy notes.

As part of a menu celebrating our solar system, this cocktail was created to represent Earth. Out of all the planets, including the moon, we think it’s the tastiest.

Where can I drink it?

In the upstairs bar of Callooh Callay, known as the JubJub bar.

Go through the wardrobe in the main bar, pass the back lounge and climb the dark staircase to this intimate little cocktail haven – but you’ll need a passcode to get through the door so speak to the hostess before attempting the journey. Booking is recommended.

Currently Callooh Callay is letting all its fabulous bartenders create their own menus and run the JubJub for three weeks at a time. Earth is from Nathan Shearer’s latest menu – available until 13th September 2015.

The Wine: Royal Tokaji Dry Furmint

What is it?

A dry white made within the Tokaji wine region of Hungry using 100% Furmint grapes.

More commonly associated with the super-sweet dessert wines of Hungary, the Furmint grape is employed here in a dry white, to stunning effect. You’ll find well-defined aromatics comprising rich honey notes and stone fruits on the nose. On the palate there is plenty of acidity which gives the palate crispness and bite.

Where can I drink it?

At Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings in Farringdon.

It’ll be on the menu all of September this year so make a booking and head down to try this unusual wine. It’s being sold at £8 for a glass, £21 for a carafe and £31 for a bottle.

The Beer: Sambrook’s Pale Ale

What is it?

Sambrook’s Pale Ale was the Battersea brewery’s inaugural craft keg product made with a German lagering technique known as Krausening but keeping to a traditional British Pale Ale recipe. It’s made with Maris Otter Pale Malt and Admiral, First Gold, Celeia and New Zealand Hallertau Hops. Golden in colour, this Pale Ale has spicy, meadow herb aromas and tastes sharp with marmalade and smokey notes. It’s brewed to 4.2%.

Where can I drink it?

Temple Brew House.

This bar acts as a microbrewery and basement pub with an impressive array of beers on tap and by the bottle. Once you’re sampled Sambrook’s Pale Ale, sold at £1.50 for a third, £2.20 for a half and £4.40 for the full pint, why not try some of Temple Brew Houses own beers?
